Students and families deserve stability during major school district transitions, which is why I supported legislation to strengthen agreements between deactivating school districts and receiving districts.
House Bill 3860 updates Illinois law by extending the required length of interdistrict agreements from two years to four years when students are involved in the consolidation process of a deactivated district. The legislation also gives districts more flexibility by allowing renewal terms to be determined through mutual agreement rather than restricting them to short extensions.
This proposal is about giving students, parents, and communities more certainty during what can often be a difficult transition process. Longer agreements will help districts better prepare for staffing, transportation, classroom resources, and other long-term planning needs while helping reduce disruption for those students.
Representative Bradley Fritts first sponsored and passed the legislation in the House. It has now passed both chambers and awaits action from the governor.
