Supporting Legislation to Retain Experienced Investigators

I recently advanced legislation out of the Senate that helps retain experienced investigators within the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

House Bill 2270 updates outdated retirement provisions in state law by raising the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65 for investigators enforcing laws under the Secretary of State. The legislation removes an outdated exemption related to Capitol Police Investigators to ensure greater consistency across positions.

This legislation reflects the realities of today’s workforce, and recognizes the value experienced investigators bring to the job. We should not be forcing needed, qualified professionals out of service when they are still fully capable of serving and protecting the public. Keeping experienced investigators on the job strengthens public safety and ensures agencies can continue benefiting from years of institutional knowledge, training, and professional judgment.

Representative Patrick Sheehan first introduced the legislation in the House, and I appreciated working alongside him to move this important proposal forward.

The legislation has now passed the General Assembly and heads to the governor’s desk for consideration.
