DIXON – State Senator Li Arellano Jr (R-Dixon) is pointing to the recently announced closure of the Tyson Foods plant in Joslin as another example of the incredible human costs of Illinois’ economic struggles. The closure, announced today, is leaving roughly 2,500 workers without jobs in the northwest edge of the 37th Legislative District.
“This is a devastating blow for northwest Illinois, and especially the Quad Cities Metro that is already being hammered by economic losses across the border to Iowa. The loss of Tyson Foods is another glaring example of the uncompetitive business climate we offer in Illinois.” Senator Arellano said. “Something needs to change immediately. Illinois’ economy is in a dangerous tailspin, especially when compared to surrounding states.”
The Tyson Foods plant in unincorporated Joslin, located in Rock Island County, has served as a major economic engine for the region since opening in 1983. After 43 years of operation, the plant will cease production beginning Thursday, abruptly eliminating thousands of jobs for families throughout the region.
“I feel deeply for these families who depended on this plant for their livelihood,” Senator Arellano said. “They are being completely uprooted. Multiple communities have been gutted almost overnight. These are 2,500 people who woke up with a job and a plan for their future and are now wondering how they are going to put food on the table. It’s heartbreaking.”
Senator Arellano is encouraging residents in the Joslin area to join him at a town hall in Port Byron on August 31 to voice their concerns.
The senator is also working to identify state resources and assistance that may be available to help affected workers and families throughout the region during this difficult transition.
