Another state audit is raising serious questions about how taxpayer dollars are being spent in Illinois.
The latest report from the Auditor General examined the University of Illinois’ Discovery Partners Institute and its abandoned headquarters project in Chicago. According to the audit, the state provided nearly $50 million directly to DPI, with approximately $37.9 million going toward the planned headquarters at The 78 development.
Construction began in September 2024, only for University of Illinois System President Timothy Killeen to abandon the headquarters plans just weeks later.
The project was originally part of a much larger initiative supported by $500 million in state capital funding and promoted as a way to encourage research, innovation, job creation, and economic growth in Illinois.
Taxpayers deserve to know how a project involving this much public money was allowed to move forward only to be abandoned shortly after construction began. Illinois families work hard for their money, and they should be able to trust that their tax dollars are being handled responsibly.
Unfortunately, this is one of multiple recent audits that raise concerns about the management of taxpayer dollars in our state. At a time when Illinois continues to approve record levels of spending, these findings are another reminder of why strong oversight and accountability matter.
The Legislative Audit Commission is expected to review the findings and seek answers from University officials about what happened and what will be done to prevent a situation like this from happening again.
