Students Get Hands-On Experience at Youth Advisory Council

My team and I recently had the opportunity to host students from across the district at my Youth Advisory Council at the State Capitol in Springfield.

We made sure to keep things engaging while they were in Springfield! Students participated in a mock committee hearing on legislation they developed last fall. This is a hands-on look at how the legislative process works and what it takes to move an idea forward.

They also toured both the Senate and House chambers and had the opportunity to meet with State Representatives Travis Weaver and Bradley Fritts, learning how both chambers work together in the legislative process.

We wrapped up the day with a visit to the Old State Capitol, where students explored Illinois history and gained a deeper appreciation for the foundation of our state government.

This council is incredibly important to me. It’s a chance to show the next generation of leaders how government works, while also hearing directly from them about the issues that matter most to young people in their daily lives. Their perspectives are valuable, and I look forward to continuing to advocate for their ideas and priorities throughout the rest of this session.

I want to thank the students for taking the time to get involved and become more engaged at such a young age, as well as the teachers and staff who made this experience possible.

We’re looking forward to this fall’s Youth Advisory Council inside the district!
